Thrombosis (Thrombophilia)
Last updated April 30, 2015
This PowerPlan has been developed by hematologists at Advocate for what is relevant to physicians treating patients at our hospitals today. It is intended for patients who do not a first-degree relative with a documented venous thromboembolism before the age of 45.
Candidates for this PowerPlan include:
- Patients with a venous thromboembolism before the age of 45 without a family history
- Patients with recurrent thrombosis
- Patients with thromboses in multiple venous sites or unusual vascular beds (hepatic vein, portal vein, mesenteric vein, cerebral vein)
- Patients with a history of warfarin-induced skin necrosis
- Patients with arterial thrombosis
In many cases, evaluation for thromboembolism will be adversely affected by current anticoagulation. Most hematologists agree that any further evaluation for thrombosis can occur in the outpatient setting.
Please use your own judgment to determine if additional testing might be needed beyond the suggested algorithm.
